Doublethink of the Day

Free nations are peaceful nations. Free nations don’t attack each other. Free nations don’t develop weapons of mass destruction.
~George W. Bush

Americans are a free people, who know that freedom is the right of every person and the future of every nation. The liberty we prize is not America’s gift to the world; it is God’s gift to humanity. ~ George W. Bush

“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them”

-George Orwell, 1984

Look at the Pretty Pictures

Jeff posted some truly lovely images over the weekend. Being out in Mountain country I can truly appreciate that kind of breathtaking splendor. I remember Jeff talking about the joys of such beautiful images. But I think I may have come to realize why those images are so awe inspiring, and it has very little to do with what the picture contains.

What is it that you never really see in those pictures? That’s right, the schnook that took the picture. When your standing on the side of a mountain seeing some vista that Ansel Adams once photographed, you realize that he was about two steps away from a thousand foot plummet. And that’s what is so breathtaking, the idea of your body being pounded into jelly by a fall that will take you a good couple of minutes to come to a stop from.

Jeff already knows this from his time as an aerial photographer. He discovered that the only way to get the really good shots is by hanging on to the landing gear of a small aircraft with your camera in hand. That is dedication to ones craft. Or absolute lunacy.

Tune in tomorrow as Jeff tries to find a knitted toe-sock pattern for his clubfooted pet elephant.
