It’s time for a summary of the year in marine biology

Interesting excerpts from an article by Eurekalert.org. Read the full article here.

Census seamount researchers found a shrimp, believed extinguished 50 million years ago, alive and well on an underwater peak in the Coral Sea. Neoglyphea neocaledonica was nicknamed “Jurassic shrimp” by its discoverers, who say it rivals the find in South Africa and Indonesia of the coelacanth, a prehistoric fish previously known only through fossils.

Among the many new species discovered by Census participants during 2006, a 1.8 kg (4 lb) rock lobster that Census explorers found off Madagascar may be the largest. Named Palinurus barbarae, the main body spans half a meter.

Census fish counters’ observation off the New Jersey coast of 20 million fish swarmed in a school the size of Manhattan Island qualifies as most new abundance found.

At a thermal vent 3 km below the surface in the equatorial Atlantic, Census researchers found shrimp and other life forms on the periphery of fluids billowing from Earth’s core at an unprecedented marine recording of 407°C, a temperature that would melt lead easily.

And what would exploring the murky depths be without having some cool photographs to show for it?

A great gift idea for the holiday season

Unveiled at the National Electronics Invention Station in Tokyo, this is a fully transparent refrigerator. Just imagine how much money can be saved, when your loved ones are standing in front of the fridge trying to decide what they want and don’t open the door until they’ve made up their minds.

Also unveiled were transparent washing machines, clothes dryers, and air conditioning units. Haven’t been able to find a price on them yet, will update you as soon as I find it.

I am opposed to millionaires… but it would be dangerous to offer me the position.

Blood Gutters

If you have read Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughter-house Five you know that a “blood gutter” is that groove on the side of a really big knife to let the blood out when you stab someone. And if you haven’t read that book, now you know anyway.

Jeff must have been interested in the concept of a “blood gutter” and other possible implications of the same. And off he went to find pictures.

I also think that Jeff has been worried about cleaning out his own gutters. Jeff doesn’t own a ladder, and just jumps to the roof from a nearby tree. Normally, this works out fine due to his Jedi talents, but it can still be a little distressing. It really was a good thing that he found someone that is even sillier about the way they clean their gutters. Although they may have swept them of leaves, I think they may have left a little something else behind. And hence the cleaning crew.

I wonder if blood is as difficult to remove from Aluminum as it is from fake leather? I’ll bet the guys in that cleaning crew know. And do they give a discount for volume? the world may never know.

Tune in tomorrow for more stories of the Christmas coconut and the kiwi that loved it.
