The lingering influences of Alan Turing

Alan Turing is considered the father of modern computing for his pioneering work in the 50s designing some of the first electronic mainframes. He also developed a test for AI to determine if it is “intelligent” or not, which is now known as the Turing Test. Sadly, Turing’s story ends in tragedy. He was homosexual during the intolerant 1950s in England. A former boyfriend entered and vandalized Turing’s home using a key that was not returned to Turing when they broke up. Turing went to the police for help, but rather than focusing on apprehending the ex-boyfriend, they attacked Turing for his sexuality. Unable to stand the mounting pressure and social rejection, Turing committed suicide. He laced an apple with cyanide, and died shortly after taking a single bite.

Today, Apple Inc. has as it’s logo a rainbow striped apple with a single bite taken out. Is this a coincidence, or a nod to the founder and innovator of modern computing?

You decide.

Humans. How Trivial

I think I know why women blink twice as many times as men: they spend much of their time trying to figure out just what the heck we were thinking. Or maybe that’s just my wife.

I notice Jeff tried to sneak a little politics in there on me. I, personally, don’t have a problem with people that think that they should stand behind their country no matter what. I just wish they would stop getting mad at me when I refuse to take that stance myself. And I think that may be why I would be inclined to question one of Jeff’s trivia about the human body. The claim is that we have fewer bones as we get older, but when they keep getting broken I’m sure that makes the number go up instead of down.

I wonder how Jeff got that del.icio.us link to work? I hope it wasn’t too tough or he’s gonna be pissed when I add the plugin that drops in pretty much all of the social bookmarking sites into the posts. And with pictures, none of this reading stuff.

So, the CIA was bugging Princess Di. I guess it makes sense, you really can’t trust someone that wealthy that is trying to help the less fortunate. Maybe it’s the fact I’m an American, but I just never got the whole thing about Princess Di. Why did the world go gaga over her? After all, she was just a wealthy, attractive lady that didn’t really do anything particularly offensive. Maybe that’s why so much time is taken up with Paris Hilton, the media is just trying to get things back in balance.

Tune in tomorrow and I’ll see if I can talk about what Jeff was doing instead of responding to flame bait. Speaking of flaming, why aren’t you monkeys leaving comments?
