The lingering influences of Alan Turing

Alan Turing is considered the father of modern computing for his pioneering work in the 50s designing some of the first electronic mainframes. He also developed a test for AI to determine if it is “intelligent” or not, which is now known as the Turing Test. Sadly, Turing’s story ends in tragedy. He was homosexual during the intolerant 1950s in England. A former boyfriend entered and vandalized Turing’s home using a key that was not returned to Turing when they broke up. Turing went to the police for help, but rather than focusing on apprehending the ex-boyfriend, they attacked Turing for his sexuality. Unable to stand the mounting pressure and social rejection, Turing committed suicide. He laced an apple with cyanide, and died shortly after taking a single bite.

Today, Apple Inc. has as it’s logo a rainbow striped apple with a single bite taken out. Is this a coincidence, or a nod to the founder and innovator of modern computing?

You decide.
