Optical illusions - almost magic
Many will probably have seen this before, but it’s one of my favorites.

Below is an old silent film of the world famous “Bullet Catch”. Just so you know, this is a trick. If you try to do this without knowing the trick, you die. It’s as simple as that. And even if you know the trick, there is still a pretty good chance that you’ll die anyway. Don’t try this. Really.
One thing that has always interested me is the popularity of things like the Bullet Catch or anything that clearly puts someone in harms way. A vast amount of magic seems to lean this way. And it is definitely a large part of the sideshow tradition that I take part in. After all, fire is dangerous, and putting it in/on your body is a sure fire way to get hurt (pardon the pun).
And when you get right down to it, I think the reason things like this continue to be so popular is the same reason that Jeff likes to post images of animals in peril. We live our lives hoping to never get hurt, but we’d like to have a little excitement as well. Magic, specifically death defying magic, lets us do both. And animals are just so damn resilient.
Tune in tomorrow for fire. and maybe some animals.
