Continuing the Hillbillies on the Web

I’ve had a link to the Hillbilly Housewife in my favorites folder for quite some time, and that’s what prompted me to start this thread of posts. The menus that she offers are really quite nice. Although, I am a little disturbed by her affinity for dried milk. I looked at the dried milk and figured that there is no real savings in buying it, and the way she blurs through milk doesn’t really make the longer shelf life all that attractive. But that’s really about the only complaint I have about her take on nutrition and thrift.

The thing I find most amazing is the fact that this lady refers to herself as a hillbilly. She is clearly very computer literate, which doesn’t really scan with my impression of hillbillies. Maybe I just know the wrong ones. Her site is fairly tame and doesn’t offer much in the way of flashy things, but it is very easy to navigate and read. Something a lot of those city folk could take a lesson from.

I’m also quite impressed with her section on homeschooling. I have very mixed feelings about the idea of homeschooling. It bothers me that the next generation may well be taught by a group of people with no real sense of the world. I’m also disturbed by the fact that a fair number of people homeschool simply for religious purposes. But then I look at people like Christopher Paolini and realize that sometimes, traditional schooling can be a hinderance.

Anyway, the Hillbilly Housewife’s recommendation of texts for teaching are really quite interesting. What will it say about our society when those instructed by “hillbillies” have a better sense of classical literature and philosophy than those that go through our school system?

I was also impressed with her tech savvy nature in reference to printers. In fact, I bought my current laser printer on the recommendations made on her website.

Hillbillies, the voice of the future. Like it or not.

Tune in tomorrow as we surf the internet while trapped in our houses by the snow.
