As an Academic I tend to write things down a lot. (not that there’s a one to one ratio of writing and academia, but it seems more pronounced within that group) I also tend to lose my pens/pencils a lot. And what do you do with a relatively inexpensive thing that you just lost? You buy another one, or ninety.
During the course of moving it seems like I’ve found every writing instrument that I have lost over the last few years. I’ve found so many that they won’t all fit in my pen cup, an item that clearly never held up its end of the deal. The truly strange thing is that I keep encountering pens in places that I would swear I had looked at mere days ago, and not seen a pen. That is what makes me think there must be magic pen fairy. The pen fairy’s sole responsibility is to hide pens, until such a time that finding them is moot, like when you’re moving out of your apartment.
Let’s face it, that’s really the only explanation that makes any sense. It couldn’t be that while you were “searching” for a mislaid pen that what you were really doing was looking over the edge of the couch, failing to be attacked by a flock of pens, and declaring the pen to be missing. Because I know when I look for a pen I go stalking the things, I even have a pith helmet, and that never seems to work either.
So, next time you run out of pens, don’t go buy more, just move, and they will flock to your door.
Tune in tomorrow for more tips on happier living.

You know, the Muslims believe in a creature called a Djinn. This being exists in a realm just outside of our vision. Islam teaches that these beings will do things like moving our pens….
