Thought for the day ~ Bruce Baum

I don’t know what’s wrong with my television set. I was getting C-Span and the Home Shopping Network on the same station. I actually bought a congressman.

Sleeping

I really like sleeping. That’s one of the reasons why these posts tend to show up a little on the late side some days. Those days that they show up early is when I wised up and wrote them the night before and set them to post in the morning.

I’ve noticed that whenever I have the debate with myself on whether I should sleep or get up and do something my brain will continue the pros and cons of the issue while my body just goes to sleep and lets my brain get on with the argument.

I think that perhaps the other reason that Jeff hasn’t considered a career in medicine is a similar take on sleeping. Except Jeff used to have a little problem with insomnia. My favorite quote from Jeff is when he was describing his schedule while we were in college. “On Tuesdays I sleep.” I always thought that was pretty funny. Until I realized he wasn’t really joking. So, perhaps he would have done well with a medical internship where the general rule seems to be sleep happens to other people. Of course, Jeff also has that other end of insomnia as well, when he drops off that’s pretty much it for quite some time. Waking Jeff is not as dangerous as waking up our friend Bob, but just about as difficult.

My biggest concern with my current sleep habits is the likelihood of causing depression. Excessive sleep is not only a symptom of depression, it is also one of the ways to induce it. Try staying in bed for a couple extra hours for a few days in a row and then try to return to your normal sleep schedule. It’s really quite a challenge. Actually, I don’t recommend that little experiment. Becoming depressed is easy, overcoming it can be a bear.

Well I’m going back to bed. Tune in tomorrow for a lesson in marathon dozing and how to pace yourself for the long haul.
