The Makers are Coming
Okay, talking about Warren Ellis again. My first encounter with Ellis was his series Transmetropolitan, which is quite a good read. In it Ellis describes these devices called “makers” that convert garbage into pretty much whatever you want. quite the exciting little doo dad.
In the current issue of Make: magazine they have an article on a project called RepRap which is as close to the idea of a “maker” as one can currently get. It’s a machine that can turn bits of plastic or metal into a prototype of some project via 3d printing. And as the webpage says, rapid prototypers aren’t all that uncommon, but the hitch is this monster is designed to be able to reproduce itself. So, if you build one, you can, in theory, use that one to build another, and that one to build another, etc. I think that’s pretty sweet. I’m going to have to check out the plans to see if my little brain can sort out how to work one and start making some stuff. Oh the ideas that I have.
Go check it out, and let us know what you think. Maybe we can use it to build the next Republican presidential candidate. They seem pretty fond of putting puppets in the White House, so why not?
Tune in tomorrow for more uninformed political commentary and an update on the world snail races.
