Why I Hate Americans

I think I sorted out why I hate and complain about Americans so much: Americans have a deep seated hatred of themselves. Go ahead, chew on that for a few minutes.

I’ll give you a for instance here. Let’s say your in a fairly big city and you want to go out to a nice, fancy restaurant, something to impress the in-laws or your boss. You look in Zagats and track down some place you think you can afford and make your reservations. When you get to the restaurant you’re seated by some bland individual and given your menu, which is not in English. Why is it not in English? Because foreign is better. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that we should ban all foreigners and tell them to “Speak English or Die!” But if we run through that same scenario in Europe, the language on the menu is the same as the country you’re in, even if it’s cuisine from a different country. Foreigners may be better at some things than we are, but we should at least feel that we know what’s going on.

Americans hate themselves. I don’t know why, but we do. Maybe that’s why we tend to spew such venom at other countries, we think they should hate themselves too. But I think we might all be a bit better off if we just sat down and said, “You know what? I like grilled chicken and mashed potatoes. Even when I can tell what it is.” Wouldn’t we all feel a bit better?

I know at a bare minimum I wouldn’t end up eating fish eyes and pig brains again, but that’s a story for another day.

I’ll try to get some Wizard World pics up later today, but traveling makes that kind of magic difficult. Stay tuned for Dave Aikins looking heroic.
