I just put up an auction for ad space on the Pumpkin with a bit of a twist. Winning bidder not only gets a link from our site, but also a special message in a video on the site, and my hurting myself for your pleasure.

For the last year and a bit I’ve been a Student at Kuk Sool Won of Muncie. It’s ran by a great family on a shoestring budget. If you’ve ever been involved in Martial Arts you know that going to tournaments and seminars and testing and all of that stuff can get a little expensive. In fact, we had to cancel our trip to this years tournament in Houston, the current world headquarters of Kuk Sool Won, due to lack of funds. And that’s no good. Tournaments and Seminars are where young martial artists make new friends and explore different methods of teaching and learning. And where they get to kick new people around.

A portion of the proceeds from the auctin will go to Kuk Sool Won of Muncie for the St. Louis Tournament in the spring. I don’t mention that in the ebay auction, because every time I did it would tell me that I had to prove I was giving money to a non-profit, which I’m not.

Anyway, check out the auction, bid, come back in a week or two and watch me hurt myself. Unless, of course, those bids are low. I can go through three of four boards, no sweat. I am just that awesome. But if it goes higher, we might run into some excitement.

It’s amazing that the amount of news that happens in the world every day always just exactly fits the newspaper.

Have you ever noticed that there are only 2 letters difference between “Cosmetology” and “Cosmology”?

I live somewhat near a school of cosmetology, and this odd little fact struck me today as I walked past it. Strange how something that society tends to look down on is so linguistically close to something society completely ignores.

I also find it peculiar that people speak ill of those in beauty school, yet also speak ill of the poorly groomed. Odd contradiction there, it’s important to look good, but not if you actually learned how.

And, of course, I don’t think most people think about Cosmology at all. The nature of the Universe isn’t particularly interesting, at least not to the average Joe. Maybe if they attended beauty school with a serious case of dyslexia they’d see the importance of understanding the world we live in. I think I might be on to something.

The team from Bangor University in Wales was dredging the waters north of Iceland as part of routine research when the unfortunate specimen, belonging to the clam species Arctica islandica, commonly known as the ocean quahog, was hauled up from waters 250 feet deep.

Only after researchers cut through its shell, which made it more of an ex-clam, and counted its growth rings did they realize how old it had been — between 405 and 410 years old.

Lampshade carved out of a pumpkin.

We have lots of chicken in the house. It’s a good meat choice, for the most part. But it gets a little on the boring side when all you really have is chicken. This state of affairs doesn’t really bother me all that much. I can eat ramen every meal for a week straight and be fine with it. I’ll feel sick from malnutrition, but I won’t care about my pallate (or however that’s spelled).

But it’s fun to look for new things every now and again.

If you type in “novel chicken recipes” into google it thinks you’re looking for a book on chicken. While that is not entirely inaccurate, that isn’t quite the idea I was hoping for. But it did remind me of the Dark Horse collection, Autobiographix, where Matt Wagner talks about making chicken parmesian. But I wanted something a little more exciting than fried chicken and cheese.

I found this Chicken Biryani recipe over on blogger. Here we have something a little more interesting. Any meat dish from India is bound to be a little on the peculiar side. A largely vegetarian population and no refrigeration makes for a little inventiveness when it comes to preparing meat.

I especially like the ingredients list, where else would you find yogurt and chilli powder in a the same marinade?

And the stuff in the actual dish is a bit of a hoot as well. When you get right down to it, if you ditch the garlic and bay leaves you pretty much have chai.

Mint/Pudina leaves - a bunch - use only the leaves
Giner-Garlic Paste - 2-3 Tbsp
Cardamom - 4 (Crush using a pestle and mortar into a coarse powder)
Cinnamon - 4
Clove - 4
Bay leaves - 4
Peppercorns - 1/4 tsp
Fennel seeds - 1/4 tsp

This is garlic chai rice to go with your chilli yogurt chicken. I think that really is the secret to non-western cooking, choose two things that probably shouldn’t be used together, and use them together. Problem solved. I wonder if chicken flavored ice cream would sell in India?

Granted, I’m sure they think the same thing about us. Well, almost the same thing. “Look, they’ve got hot peppers, but no coconut milk, are they mad?” Anyway, I’m not sure I’ll be making this particular recipe anytime soon. Not because it doesn’t look tasty, it actually does, but because I don’t have most of those spices. And I’m not real sure where to get them.

Tune in tomorrow as Halloween approaches and we have absolutely nothing prepared. Sheesh, you’d think a site with “Pumpkin” in it’s name would know better. I’m sure something will turn up.
