Have you ever noticed that there are only 2 letters difference between “Cosmetology” and “Cosmology”?

I live somewhat near a school of cosmetology, and this odd little fact struck me today as I walked past it. Strange how something that society tends to look down on is so linguistically close to something society completely ignores.

I also find it peculiar that people speak ill of those in beauty school, yet also speak ill of the poorly groomed. Odd contradiction there, it’s important to look good, but not if you actually learned how.

And, of course, I don’t think most people think about Cosmology at all. The nature of the Universe isn’t particularly interesting, at least not to the average Joe. Maybe if they attended beauty school with a serious case of dyslexia they’d see the importance of understanding the world we live in. I think I might be on to something.

The team from Bangor University in Wales was dredging the waters north of Iceland as part of routine research when the unfortunate specimen, belonging to the clam species Arctica islandica, commonly known as the ocean quahog, was hauled up from waters 250 feet deep.

Only after researchers cut through its shell, which made it more of an ex-clam, and counted its growth rings did they realize how old it had been — between 405 and 410 years old.
