Sometimes it’s nice to shop in a casual environment

Debra Jackson said she likes shopping at the Dollar Palace because it is convenient and casual. “I don’t have to get all dressed up like I’m going to Wal-Mart or something,” she said

Drunken Pumpkin, Indeed

Pumpkin Brewing

Just found this flickr set via BoingBoing. I couldn’t let something like this slip past. I mean seriously, can you get a pumpkin more drunken than one that had the alcohol made in it?

Steampunk and New Living Arrangements

I’m currently in the process of buying a house. It’s something like having a root canal, only it takes a few weeks/ months instead of minutes. In case you’ve never had a root canal, stab yourself in the gums with a dirty pen, wait a few weeks, and then you’ll know just what it’s like. Twice.

Anyway, the house is actually pretty cool and the bidding thing has been going pretty smooth. But no one cares about that kind of crap, so I have to spice things up a bit. Really, our biggest issue is that we’re probably going to be closing on the house a good six months before our lease is up, and that kind of sucks.

The really sweet thing about this house is that it’s 120 years old, and some other soul has done most of the restoration/ renovation work to it already. My wife and I are pretty excited about moving into a Victorian era home, even if the house isn’t particularly “Victorian.” It really is just an old house that someone has taken a fair amount of care of. But we want to make it something a little different.

For those of you that care, you know that the Steampunk genre of fiction/ lifestyle is set nominally in the Victorian setting. If you didn’t know that check out the Steampunk magazine. And the house comes with a basement previously used as a workshop, so I’ve also been sifting through the Steampunk Workshop a fair amount lately, as well.

My goal is to turn as much of the house into a Steampunk haven as possible. I’ve been spending a fair amount of time on ebay looking at chandeliers and cabinet hardware from a hundred years ago. I’ve already bought my leather apron and suspenders for my jeans. My tinker clothes are nearly complete. All I need now are some of those swank goggles that will fit over my glasses. Or eyes that actually worked right so I wouldn’t need the glasses.

If you have any decor suggestions in this vein feel free to drop me a line. If we take your suggestion we’ll post pics of the outcome (these will take a while, we don’t own the house yet, remember?)

Tune in tomorrow for ways to avoid alligators in the sewer and the best patching kit for your babbage driven dirigible.

Is it Christmas

Okay, just to obsess a bit. I went to the Is it Christmas site that Jeff posted on Friday.

Now, I’ve been trying to understand a bit of this “programming” stuff that everyone says the interwub is full of these days so I had a look-see at the source. I thought there might be some clever little bit of fun that had it checking calendars or something. Nope, it’s just hard coded to say “No”. I wonder if they’ll go back and change it on Christmas day? I guess if they do we’ll know where they live. Well, at least what time zone. Assuming they’re a little OCD and change it at midnight. Which is what I’d do.

Thought for the day ~ George Burns

If you live to be one hundred, you’ve got it made. Very few people die past that age.
